Charlie Morecraft,

The thought that comes to mind is: “life-changing.” Yes, that is how many of us felt after your visit, for it was not only a life-altering experience that has brought this heartbreaking episode in your life to such a fruitful mission of accomplishments. It has also made my life, and the life of many others who had the opportunity to listen to your experience, focus on what is truly important where safety and our safety mission at American Airlines is concerned.

I wish to thank you and your hard-working staff wholeheartedly for honoring us with your presence and talking to our Miami Hub employees about the episode that changed your life, and in so doing, has moved you to become a beacon, a guide with a life mission to teach and reinforce the need for safety. Seldom if ever are we offered this unique experience to learn so vividly from the terrible, devastating pain of another who unselfishly dedicates his life to promote awareness before it is too late. After your visit, the wave of comments and feedback from those present, over a true commitment towards safety, and the reinforcement to continue to seek effective alternatives in changing attitudes towards safety, left those who were unable to attend due to operational demands feeling frustrated and hoping for a future opportunity to share your presence and wealth of experiences, once again. I truly believe when everyone interacts as a team in performing safety functions and sharing a profound sense of responsibility towards one another, we are one-step closer to achieving an injury free work place. This objective communicates to every employee that safety is a never-ending commitment, which American Airlines takes very seriously and is the core principle that guides us.

Charlie, it is truly encouraging to know that you are willing to pay us another visit to be with our employees.

Thank you once again, and I will see you soon.

Rudy G. Albert

Safety Works 2006 Expo

Fumes from a petroleum-soaked shirt ignited, as Charles T. Morecraft sprinted past an idling truck causing a refinery fire that cost him his way of life.

It never should have happened, Morecraft admits. But in 1980, he had a cavalier attitude regarding safety. On this particular night, he was comfortable. He had his feet up on his desk and he dreamed about his upcoming vacation, when a call came that interrupted his relaxing shift.

Morecraft is president of Phoenix Safety Management Inc., based in Florida. As the keynote speaker during SCF Arizona’s annual Safety Works Expo, March 7-8, at the Mesa Convention Center, Morecraft will tell his tale.

His story is one of survival and of learning a painful lesson. Morecraft was injured critically in the explosion at an Exxon refinery in Linden, N.J. He suffered burns to almost 50 percent of his body.

“Mostly I speak about attitude,” More-craft said during a telephone interview. “I speak to everyone regardless of their jobs. My story is not so much about the accident; it’s more about the pain I put my family through. That is what safety is about; going home at night to your wife and kids. Safety is personal.”

Morecraft admits that before the acci-dent he didn’t have a good attitude about safety. Like some of his colleagues, he didn’t always wear protective equipment.
“I would wear sunglasses to safety sessions so you couldn’t tell whether I was asleep,” he says. “As for (personal) protective equipment, a bunch of us considered it ‘cool’ not to wear all the safety gear issued. We thought we were a tough, macho bunch. We modified our PPE to suit our image.”

Never routine

His accident changed all that. Working one night, he was called to a job he had done thousands of times. He wore his cut-off, flame-retardant shirt, but did not put on his safety glasses. “When I got to the site, I left my truck running and ran up to the valves.”

Morecraft knew the valves leaked, because Exxon had targeted them for replacement during the refinery’s next shutdown. Because he considered the job routine, he says he didn’t follow
the procedures. When I went to fix the problem, the highly flammable petroleum product in the line surged up, splashed me in the eyes and drenched my shirt.”

When he cleared his eyes he knew he was in trouble. The truck still was running, so he took off in a sprint. It was too late. The chemical vapors hit the truck’s ignition system and an explosion engulfed Morecraft. He dived into a water puddle to douse the flames on him, but there was little he could do about the refinery.

Morecraft says he remembers the excruciating pain he felt while riding to the hospital in the ambulance. He yelled at the attendants “Let me die! Please let me die!”

That pain was only the beginning. Burn victims go through a process called debriding, which Morecraft explains is how doctors treat the skin to prevent the growth of scar tissue. “They lower you into a tank containing a combination of water, Clorox and antibiotics. Then they peel off the dead burned skin and then, day after day, the new scabs as they form.”

Family suffering

After three months of this process, Morecraft spent the next five years under-going 50 different operations. Morecraft’s last operation occurred only four years ago.

I had to admit to myself that before the accident I didn’t give a damn and I never had.

And he wasn’t the only one who suffered. “My family went through the living hell of seeing me suffer, while their own lives were completely disrupted,” Morecraft shares. “My family had to wonder if I would survive the first few days. Then they had to cope with living and growing up for five years while their father, husband and son was a helpless invalid.”

When he was able to work again, he returned to Exxon. “They couldn’t decide what to do with me, so they made me a safety officer,” he says. “I guess that’s what happens when you blow up a refinery.”

But even then, Morecraft did not accept his responsibility in the accident. “I blamed everyone else,” he says. “I hated everyone. I had a real chip on my shoulder.”

No more blame game

Those feelings finally got the best of him. Some of his buddies derided him for trying to make them follow safety proce-dures. “One day I just got sick of blaming others,” Morecraft says. “I had to admit to myself that before the accident I didn’t give a damn and I never had.”

By telling the story of his careless attitude , Morecraft says, “A great burden was lifted off my shoulders, and I stopped being a victim.”

His supervisors liked what they heard and asked him to tell his story at other Exxon facilities. Then Exxon put his story on videotape.

When Morecraft saw an advertisement from a Los Angeles video maker searching for material, he sent the company the tape. The producer liked it, tweaked it and made a safety video that has been translated into 10 languages.

After working 10 years at the refinery in the safety position, Morecraft left to start his own business. He now spreads his message about workplace safety, which he says is making a difference and is extremely rewarding.

“I was doing some work at coal mines in Utah, and one coal miner who heard me speak during the day asked if he could bring his son back that night,” Morecraft recalls. The miner explained that his son raced dirt bikes. “About a year later I went back to do a follow-up talk, and the guy comes up and starts crying as he tells me, ‘You saved my kid’s life.’”
Shortly after the son listened to More-craft, he was in a serious accident on his dirt bike, falling on his head. The man told Morecraft that his son never wore a helmet until after sitting through More-craft’s safety presentation.

DECREASED INJURIES BY 40% OVER PREVIOUS YEARS!

DECREASED WORKMENS COMPENSATION PAY OUTS BY 75%!

From Ray Edinger, Director ASM Front-End Operations

Comments: “Charlie Morecraft’s video ‘Remember Charlie’ is a powerful communication tool that ASM Front-End Operations has used to train our people to take personal responsibility for safety. We began showing the video to our employees in October 2002, and this along with other safety training we have developed has allowed the following:

Results: (Our people) have worked over 1 million hours with only one recordable case this year to date. This is a significant improvement in our safety performance.”

From Gary Wogan, Health & Safety Specialist at Pilkington, NA

“Dear Charlie:

I recently received a call from another national safety product company and after politely listening to the gentleman’s pitch I asked if they sold the Charlie videos. He knew nothing about them. So I went on, for a good 5 minutes, recounting the merits and contents of Charlie’s two videos: “Remember Charlie” and “Safety, Everyone’s Responsibility”, which I use for my annual safety training.

I work in the float glass manufacturing industry and for the past two years have been using the Charlie videos in my annual safety training. When I first used the “Remember Charlie” video and told the class it was 56 minutes long, the collective moan almost pushed me out of the classroom. But I knew I was in no danger of putting them to sleep when I started the video and turned off the lights. Word leaked out that I would be using the second video during the next annual training, now just finishing up. As the class starts each session I am asked when the Charlie video will be played. And, there is even a running commentary from the class as to whether the second video is better than the first.

Charlie’s presentation style and personality has a way of personalizing the message for each viewer. During the rest of the class, as we cover the remainder of the safety topics, the comment often comes up, “What would Charlie do?”

I just wanted to thank you, Charlie, and your crew for turning Charlie’s personal tragedy into such a dynamic, heart-hitting message for the benefit of others’ lives.”

Association of Upstream Operators of Trinidad & Tobago presents “Safety First & Always” featuring Charles T. Morecraft – Safety Motivational Speaker

At Movie Towne – December 6th 2006 – (0900hrs-1200hrs)

Charlie has worked for 27 years as an Exxon Refinery Worker and Manager of Safety. For the past sixteen years has traveled extensively making presentations for major corporations, organizations, public utilities, civic groups, as well as other non-profit organizations.

Most of us have the same attitude about safety that Charlie Morecraft had for a decade and a half while working at a refinery. Having been critically injured in an explosion that burned over 45% of his body, Charlie Morecraft conveys, in the most penetrating way, the lesson he so painfully learned. Seldom, are we confronted by the real consequences of an abuse in safety practices. You are guaranteed to be deeply moved and motivated to never again take safety for granted. The emphasis of this presentation is the significance of attitude and personal responsibility.

Some of the learning objectives of the presentation are: To facilitate insight into personal safety practices and attitudes; A”wake-up call” that shakes us out of complacency and taking responsibilities for granted; Make us more responsible for our safety on the job, at home, at play, at travel, everywhere. This presentation will dramatically change our attitude toward safety. Our actions and behavior will go from being thoughtless, lackadaisical and routine to “Safety First & Always”. Our consciousness will be raised to a new level.

Charlie Morecraft is a powerful and dynamic public speaker. His audiences get a highly personal, private look at what happened to one man – – – and how it could happen to any one of us. As Charlie always says, “I’m just an ordinary guy……… with an extraordinary story to tell”.

The message imparted is one of vital significance and universal magnitude.

Burns put teen in Boston hospital
By SETH HARKNESS, Portland Press Herald Writer SHAPLEIGH, MAINE –

A teenager who investigators say was showered with flames after he poured gasoline on a smoldering fire pit was being treated in a Boston hospital Thursday for burns on 90 percent of his body. Sixteen-year-old Jason Caouette of Shapleigh suffered extensive third-degree burns after he tried to revive a campfire with gasoline at Silver Lake Wednesday night. The gas can exploded in his hands, expelling flames and burning liquid, according to Sgt. Joel Davis of the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

Caouette was flown to a hospital in Boston Thursday, after being taken by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland following the accident. State officials said they did not know the name of the hospital; Maine Medical officials declined to identify the hospital.

The explosion also burned another Shapleigh teenager, 17-year-old Charles Hayes, who was standing nearby when the gasoline ignited. Hayes Suffered first-degree burns on one foot and second-degree burns on the other, according to Davis. Hayes was taken to Maine Medical Center, where a spokeswoman said Thursday that he had been treated and released. Officials from the state Fire Marshal’s Office were at the site of the fire at 16 Whippoorwill Lane Thursday morning to investigate the explosion, which Davis said had been ruled an accident. The explosion occurred outside a small seasonal camp at the southern end of Silver Lake that belongs to Caouette’s grandmother, Mary Barrett. Barrett was at home when the explosion occurred, said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. Whippoorwill Lane is a narrow, private lane that follows the edge of the lake for a short distance and is lined with closely spaced cottages. On Thursday, several residents near the scene of the accident identified themselves as relatives of one of the burn victims but refused to discuss the events of the previous night. Davis said fire officials usually see several accidents a year caused by pouring gasoline on open flames, typically when someone is trying to start a brush fire. “It’s just a bad combination,” he said.

Features: Issues & Trends — March/April 2005

Start Spreading the News

AGC firms share their safety successes to help establish an industry-wide culture of best practices

By Mary Buckner Powers

A cultural revolution is happening within the construction industry and it’s all about making safety a value instead of a priority.

“Priorities change, values don’t,” says Al Arguedas, safety manager at Skanska USA in Beaverton, Ore.

Companies that have embraced the new way of thinking about safety have seen results that range from better communications among subcontractors to vastly improved profits. It sounds too good to be true, but firms have the evidence to back up their claims.

There is a catch, however. If corporate leaders embrace safety simply to improve their products and profits, it will fail, says Jay Greenspan, founder of JMJ Associates in Austin. His consulting firm helps companies move beyond counting incidents to a new culture where safety becomes a passion. “The bottom-line results are a gift,” he says.

The Human Side

Safety statistics tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a huge reduction in the number of construction accidents between World War II and 1990. But the incident rates have flattened in the last 15 years.

“We spend more time, energy and money today on safety than at any time in history with no improvement in the numbers,” says Greenspan.

The return on the safety investment today is zero. “Is there any part of your business where you would tolerate no return in 15 years?” he says.

When workers are equipped with the proper training, processes, procedures and the right tools, Greenspan says only one variable is left to blame for most injuries-human error. To move beyond the 15-year plateau and reduce the number of injuries and incidents, companies have to focus on the human side of safety.

“That takes a culture of support and a commitment from management,” he says.

Skanska USA’s Oregon office, formerly Baugh Construction, saw its incident rate drop from 7.0 in 1996 to .92 in 1999 after company managers changed their approach. Now the rate hovers around 1.0 every year. The firm shared its new safety philosophy with its top 40 subcontractors, whose incident rates over three years dropped from about 8.0 to 1.5.

(photo credit: Workers should wear high-visibility safety vests when working in close proximity to heavy equipment on excavation sites.)

“We couldn’t have achieved that without a total focus on safety,” says Tom Anderson, Bergelectric’s vice president. “Excelling at safety really means you are in control.”Bergelectric Corp. in Los Angeles, the grand award winner in the Associated General Contractors’ 2004 safety excellence program, saw its profit margin as a percentage of volume increase by 40% in 2004. Its business has grown since 1996 from $80 million a year in revenue to $320 million.

Bergelectric placed second in the AGC safety competition in 2003, and company officials were stunned at their competitors’ levels of safety sophistication. “We came away saying we need to kick it up a notch or two,” Anderson says.

Creating Passion

Tim Gottberg, chairman of the AGC program’s award judges and safety manager at GLY Construction, Bellevue, Wash., says what sets the winners apart is their passion. Finalists submit a written description of their safety program and deliver a five-minute presentation to the judges, who then have 10 minutes to ask questions.

“You know the passion when you hear it and when you read it. You can feel it,” Gottberg says. Judges try to look beyond the safety statistics to see the company’s commitment. “The winners are doing it because they think it’s the right thing to do.”

Charlie Bacon, president and CEO of Limbach Facility Services, Pittsburgh, is former CEO of Bovis Lend Lease. The New York City-based contractor won an AGC safety award in 2003. Bacon says he thought Bovis was doing a good job with safety, until it had a fatality.

“We realized we were doing things right procedurally, but we still were not getting into the guys’ heads,” he says.

Bacon is taking Limbach down a new path. “We want to be way beyond what OSHA [the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration] requires,” he says. “We want to be incident and injury free.”

Bacon’s challenge is to make sure Limbach’s senior staff understands what he’s trying to do and share that enthusiasm with trade workers. “This is my passion. I want to change the industry,” he says.

A Moral Obligation

According to Bacon, most tradespeople today have had so much exposure to safety training that they cringe at the idea of another safety class.

“Now we need to make them aware of what will happen if they injure themselves [and] what will happen to their families,” he says.

Bacon tells the story of a manager who saw a carpenter without a harness and asked him if he had a family: “In one second, you could be off the building. What about your wife and kids?” The carpenter responded that no one had ever explained safety to him that way.

“That was a success. We changed that man’s thinking about safety,” says Bacon.

The key to Bacon’s safety success at Limbach is that he actually cares about the workers, says JMJ’s Greenspan. “He’s not pretending. It’s not fake, it’s not politically correct. The commitment to safety as a value requires honesty in order to work,” Greenspan says. Workers have to see that managers mean what they say. “It’s a dignity and respect thing.”

Washington Group International won AGC’s 2004 safety excellence award in the heavy division for more than one million work hours. The company has the attitude that construction workers are friends and family and it is imperative that a firm take care of its own, says Brad Giles, vice president of safety. “We have a moral obligation to take care of our employees,” he says.

Safety is a corporate value at WGI, but it is managed as a function, just like cost, quality or schedule. “We look at safety as a leading indicator. If we can manage it, we can manage the rest of the job. If we have a safe project, we will have a successful project,” Giles says.

At Boise-based WGI, the scope of the project is reviewed to find potential hazards, and a plan is developed to eliminate or reduce them. The company continues to improve its safety matrix, and 2003 was its safest year yet and its best year financially. “We can point solidly to a correlation,” Giles says.

Safety starts at the top at WGI and moves down through the levels of management to the workers. This also applies overseas, including its more than 25 engineers in Iraq. “We work at the same standard abroad as we do in the U.S.,” says Giles.

WGI shares its safety values and practices with all of its competitors. “We might be joint venture partners tomorrow,” says Giles.

Company officials also work with high schools and vocational schools that have building programs. “We train the instructors to teach the right way to be safe,” he says.

WGI holds workshops to train safety professionals, supervisors, clients and even regulators. “We share our best practices,” Giles says, noting that WGI spent $52 million on safety training last year. WGI’s next project is to inject safety into current and future managers’ business curricula. “Most MBA students don’t have a single class on safety issues, workers’ compensation and the hidden costs they represent,” says Giles.

Safety is one of five core values in the engineering and construction giant that has gone from measuring lost-time cases to making safety a performance objective and leading indicator.

“We must have good injury rates, but it’s the other things that set us apart,” Giles says.

Was it worth the time?

Was the message & the messenger effective?

Have you heard or seen any positive effects following this event?

Would you recommend similar Inspirational Safety Presentations be considered?

I will be attending the annual 2007-2008 H&S planning summit in San Antonio, TX next week & make sure all your voices are heard.

Attendees Comments –

“Yes it was worth the time spent. It seems that the guys got the message. I think it is too early to see results. Yes I would recommend more sections like this one.”

“The presentation was not only worth the time and money – it truly is one of those “life changing” types of events that will be remembered. If the possibility arises for Charlie to address our folks, I say do it! Even though he is paid for his time (this is his new found career), Charlie should be commended for his efforts – sharing the difficulties experienced by one to help another avoid the same horrible fate is something to be admired. I have found it to be very easy to get on the “Safety Express” thinking about some of the bone chilling descriptions of his accident and the aftermath. This is a message that I am forwarding to my crews with EMPHASIS! I think the part of his presentation that really got to me was his account of the effects on his family from the accident. This is a subject that most people don’t consider right away when thinking about an accident and the associated recovery (at least I didn’t). Thanks for the opportunity to experience this. I assure you it was NOT a waste of time!!!”

“The presentation we went to last week was definitely worth the time. I found it to be very interesting and a little scary. You really do think that accidents will never happen to you but you never know. I personally think this event should have been mandatory for some individuals who have had some safety reminders in the past. He really makes you think about wearing your safety gear. His statement, “if you think wearing safety equipment for a couple of hours is uncomfortable try using a cane to walk or wearing a burn mask for 1 year” really stuck with me and I have been letting my department know that statement. I know that Charlie’s presentation is very expensive but if we were to have him come down here to talk to the guys I think it would be well worth the investment. I know he got through to me and I am sure he would get through to the rest of the staff.”

“The presentation was very effective and powerful to say the least. Charlie sent a clear message about safety and how it is an essential aspect of not only our professional lives but of our personal lives too. I would recommend this presentation and others like it to anyone. Thank you for giving us this opportunity. I am looking forward to more presentations like this.”

“Thanks for arranging for Charlie to come to CT. All the Associates here in New Haven have seen his video but I think by seeing him in person and being able to ask him questions about his experience that it helped make it more real. I over heard some of my guys talking about the presentation this morning over coffee and just maybe something sank in.”

“Let me start with it was absolutely worth the time and the message was quite effective. One of our associates from the GNHWPCA directed by OMI told his family when he got home and his wife started crying. She felt really bad for Charlie but the message got through to her by her husband. The guys, a couple of weeks later, are still talking about it.”

“As far as positive effects, the guys seem to realize that just simple routine things done on a day to day basis can impact the rest of their lives. Working in the street, over open holes, working on the combination truck here, etc. We’ve had discussions about hardhats. One thing I’ve explained about hardhats is nobody dislikes wearing them more than I do but to think when they don their hardhat, it’s like plugging in their safety brain. It’s corny but somewhat effective.”

“Some of the men are wondering if another inspirational safety speaker will be able to top the message of Charlie. They are looking forward to the next speaker. Job well done.”

Good morning,

My name is Edward Benchoff and I’m the Industrial Hygiene Officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS NIMITZ (CVN-68). We’re currently in the Arabian Gulf and, due to the high number of flight operations, we are conducting quite a bit of maintenance on the aircraft (and ship in general). One of our problem areas is always enforcing the use of various PPE.

I had the opportunity to watch the “Remember Charlie” video some years ago and was struck by how I was drawn in by Charlie’s amazing monologue. He does a fantastic job of relating how important PPE is, in words that my crew would be able to understand and relate to. I am very, very interested in getting a copy of the video to play during our next All Hands meeting in our hangar bay.

Thank you and keep up the great videos!

Very Respectfully,
